News: McCutchen's first big league win helped Pittsburgh avoid a 100-loss season, earning him kudos from manager John Russell, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: "What I liked was how he went right after guys," Russell said. "He's not overpowering and needs to get ahead in the count, and that's what he did." McCutchen is already 27 years of age but will compete for a starting spot in the 2010 rotation. He holds a 1-2 record with a 4.21 ERA and 1.35 WHIP. McCutchen needs to work on his K:BB ratio of 19:11, but he's gone at least five innings in each of his five starts.
