News: Burnett will start Game 5 against the Phillies on Monday, the Newark Star-Ledger's Marc Carig reports.
Analysis: The Yankees have used CC Sabathia on short rest twice in these playoffs, but this is the first time they've asked Burnett to do the same. He was outstanding in a Game 2 start, and he'll likely need to be brilliant again to keep pace with Phillies ace Cliff Lee.
Thursday, October 29, 2009
News: Burnett was outstanding in a Game 2 win over the Phillies on Thursday, allowing just one run in seven innings. He struck out nine Philadelphia hitters while walking only two.
Analysis: Burnett jumped on opposing hitters early, starting the first 11 batters he faced with a strike. The frequent 0-1 advantage helped him reach such a high strikeout total, with his knee-buckling curveball repeatedly serving as his preferred knockout punch. He may pitch again as soon as Game 5 depending on how manager Joe Girardi chooses to handle his rotation.
