News: Niemann, who is out of options this spring, could initially be used in long relief this season, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Analysis: Nominally, Niemann is competing for the fifth starter's job. But in reality, that's sewn up by David Price, barring a spring training collapse or injury. Rays manager Joe Maddon compared Niemann's putative role to how J.P. Howell was initially used in 2008.
