| Analysis: Chavez had hoped that spinal fusion surgery would be 10-15 years down the road, but doctors have now told him his back could go at any time, requiring the fusion surgery much sooner than expected. "To say the least, I was really thrown by that information," Chavez said. "It's disheartening. It was kind of the worst-case scenario. It just sucks. Hopefully, it's another 10 or 15 years, but I've just got to be careful now. It goes beyond baseball." Chavez will continue to strengthen the back via rehab exercises, and hopes to return in a few weeks, but there's all sorts of risk going forward. |
