Eno Sarris: I’d pair Folty with any of the other three to see if you can improve at all. Hughes could bounce back, Kelly is a perpetual tease. I’d try Folty plus Kelly to someone below you in standings for their worst veteran with some spice. Possible? If not, drop Folty. Change is terrible.

Eno Sarris: With current roster, maybe not. But with Berrios, if he’s as good as he can be, plus maybe some good choices in the pen and rotation, yes, they could be better.

People in Detroit are stupid and think that K Rod is just this year’s iteration of Joe Nathan, Jose Valverde, Todd Jones, etc. This was a great deal for the Tigers, right? They get a good bullpen arm under multiple years of control for not very much. All things considered, is the difference between Kimbrel and K Rod anything close to what their new teams gave up for them?

Eno Sarris: New closers have better velocity than the closers they replace, so there is actually some risk to K-Rod that isn’t really there as much for Kimbrel. He’s pitching backwards really well, but ideally you’d have a guy that could pitch frontwards. I think they should also sign O’Day or find another reliever. One guy like K-Rod doesn’t solve this.

Eno Sarris: Easy Jack is a nice easy fruity session IPA. You could try a milk stout like Left Hand’s milk stout, but that’s a bit thick. How’s Sweet Action from Sixpoint, people out there? Is that a nice cream ale?

What will/should Cleveland do at DH? Would trading for a proven veteran on a one-year contract, like Beltran or Encarnacion, make sense, or would they be better off with internal options or a reclamation project?

Eno Sarris: I’m split on this. DHing is probably a skill, and you’ll get less out of your DH position if you rotate guys in and out of it. At the same time, it seems like an ideal way to deal with nagging injuries to a veteran. Wonder if they couldn’t sign Mike Napoli and make it work. They already talking about trading pitching for an outfielder, so there are only so many trades they can make.

Eno Sarris: Keep them until prospect lists come out, then shop them if you’re competitive. Dude is young and not that close, and there’s a lot of risk between now and then.

I tend to default to expecting big things from teams with loaded rotations. Cleveland before the season. Mets over Royals. Why am I always wrong? Am I overrating the value of starting pitching?

Eno Sarris: I feel the same way, and want to call the Indians again next year. Starting pitchers are just so iconic, they change the game more than any one single player, it’s easy to gravitate towards them. But the evidence I’ve seen that I believe in says that pitchers and batters control the outcomes of events equally.

Is there any difference between a fosh changeup and a split-finger change? Does anyone call it a fosh anymore? Where in the hell did that term come from?

Eno Sarris: Man I had the stories in my split-finger piece for last year’s The Hardball Times Annual, but I forget now. I think it has something to do with slipping away like a fish, but I forget who coined it.

Anyway, Affeldt explained to me the difference. A split finger is held between the fingers and leaves your hand from between those two fingers. Lincecum threw a FOSH, which looks like a split finger grip, but if you look closer (I have grip pics in a piece), his last two fingers are on the ball, and the ball comes off of those fingers. It’s like a circle in that you’re still using your other two fingers.

Eno Sarris: I agree, and plenty of brewers actually agree with you. The guys at Cellarmaker are really proud of their Lite Jade for good reason, and Fieldworks’ brewer (formerly of modern times) says his favorite beer is Easy Jack.

Hey Eno, everyone makes a big deal about good GMs, Bad GMs and Great GMs.. But aren’t they just the “company salesman”? The rest of the FO has their analytics, they’re targeted players, the budget etc.. and the GM basically goes out and sells players on the team and helps in negotiations?

Eno Sarris: To some extent they are the decider, but they make decisions slightly by picking the people that talk to them, so it really is a group thing. That was one thing that Omar Minaya said when people wanted to point out he drafted many of these Mets. He said, sure, but there were a ton of people in the room.

Eno Sarris: I said Zobrist but don’t love it. Span is hurt. Desmond I like if it’s like 3/45 or 1/15 or some sort of pillow-esque deal, not if it’s like 5/80 or more. Heyward I would pay BUCKS for. Parra has been below replacement for two years, and even if his D is better than that, he better be cheap.

Sorry if I missed any Cy discussion, I’m late to the party. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the folks that say Arrieta didn’t deserve the award “for half a good year”? Seemed like there were a lot of them on Twitter last night, and it just feels like the dumbest argument ever. A) his first half was also really solid, and B) all his counting/rate stats matched or were within spitting distances of Greinke/Kershaw’s. There are plenty of great arguments in favor of Kershaw or Greinke over Arrieta, but why pick that one?

Eno Sarris: I said I had Arrieta third, but actually, I like using RA9/WAR for the CY because I also think WPA is useful for the MVP — Looking backward for a one-year award, I’m okay with rewarding them for sequencing, to some extent. If I’m talking true talent for whatever reason, I’d rather take away some credit for the defense. I thought Arrieta’s season was right there with the other two, myself.

Eno Sarris: No idea how Jerry values DJ Peterson, but if he’s looking at defense, and since he didn’t draft him, that might be a match. People are really down on DJ, but I talked to him, liked what he said, and liked parts of his swing.

Eno Sarris: Bartenders in San Diego swore the same to me, but I don’t think there’s a ton of difference. Pure Hoppiness is my least favorite. Duet is awesome, and Nelson is The Best.

super weird question, but being a big guy (6’7) and a former pitcher, and you being the resident hand/grip guy, what pitcher have you interviewed/got grips from had the biggest hands? Did you ask him about it?

Eno Sarris: Henry Owens, and yeah we did a bit. If I remember right, the changeup was easy because he can choke the crap out of the ball with his hands. And breaking balls get bigger if you put them deeper in your palm. I’d guess quick/late movement like the Warthen Slider would be harder. And Owens is mostly change/curve.

A few chats ago I believe you fielded a question about whether steals in Fantasy are now as valuable (or maybe even move valuable) than HRs. If you could elaborate further, I’d really appreciate it. Personally, I can’t see how this is possible. In fact, this year I’m contemplating officially punting steals, since it seems to me that steals are the one category that don’t necessarily ensure a good placing in any other offensive category (except maybe runs and BA for leadoff hitters). But, still, if one were to target exclusively upper- and middle-tier power hitters who hit at or near the heart of their teams’ respective lineups and combined for a decent BA, it seems like that could be an effective strategy, especially in a shallower roto league. Which would suggest steals aren’t as valuable.

Eno Sarris: I like that strategy in H2H but in roto I don’t punt cats. Steals are rarer now, and last offseason we had HR and SB equal in standing gains points values, which look at the effect of a stat on the leaderboard.

Eno Sarris: SB absolutely correlated to R, though.

Eno Sarris: Yah. Don’t manipulate the ball with your wrist, throw like a fastball and spin your fingers a bit at the end. Focus on velocity and command more than break.

One of my favorite post-story notes in an NYT article was that John Olerud and Mike Piazza, who had a combined ~8 steals between them in their careers, completed a double steal when Todd Zeile botched his end of a hit and run. I love imagining their terrified, then relieved faces. My other favorite is Mike Cameron seeing Kaz Matsui in the locker room and saying “What’s up dog?” Matsui, who spoke like ten words of English, replied, “Chilling.”
