Am I crazy not wanting to give Ben Zobrist a big contract from hos age 34-38 seasons, especially with other viable second base options and the apparent limited payroll room?

12:00
Eno Sarris: Yeah he was league average last year. I’d like him on 3 for 40 or something, worried he’ll get much more.

12:01
Comment From The Dude
Why was last night terrible?

12:01
Eno Sarris: Three year old has croup, one year old has an ear infection, the 15-year-old dogs we’re sitting are senile and started barking at the crying, and I had acid reflux.

12:01
Comment From Bobby Blownilla
Advice about Phil Hughes, Gio, Folty, and Joe Kelly please. I’m going to be butting up against my roster limit and they are going to be my 9-12 pitchers where I start essentially 6. QS and Ks league. If I drop them they probably get scooped up. Thanks!

12:02
Eno Sarris: I’d pair Folty with any of the other three to see if you can improve at all. Hughes could bounce back, Kelly is a perpetual tease. I’d try Folty plus Kelly to someone below you in standings for their worst veteran with some spice. Possible? If not, drop Folty. Change is terrible.

12:02
Comment From Bobby Blownilla
I was so ready to order a sour last night when my friends talked me into a pitcher of Pilsner then Fat Tire to split for the free wings….I wanted a sour!

12:03
Eno Sarris: And I hate Fat Tire!

12:03
Comment From Yordanos Delivery
Is Minnesota’s ceiling for success in 2016 higher than their actual success level achieved in 2015?

12:03
Eno Sarris: With current roster, maybe not. But with Berrios, if he’s as good as he can be, plus maybe some good choices in the pen and rotation, yes, they could be better.

12:04
Comment From Pretty Tony
People in Detroit are stupid and think that K Rod is just this year’s iteration of Joe Nathan, Jose Valverde, Todd Jones, etc. This was a great deal for the Tigers, right? They get a good bullpen arm under multiple years of control for not very much. All things considered, is the difference between Kimbrel and K Rod anything close to what their new teams gave up for them?

12:05
Eno Sarris: New closers have better velocity than the closers they replace, so there is actually some risk to K-Rod that isn’t really there as much for Kimbrel. He’s pitching backwards really well, but ideally you’d have a guy that could pitch frontwards. I think they should also sign O’Day or find another reliever. One guy like K-Rod doesn’t solve this.

12:05
Comment From Buck for President
Would Oswaldo Arcia be a good buy low target for the O’s? What would it realistically take to acquire him?

12:06
Eno Sarris: I guess, but so many whiffs in that bat. I wouldn’t spend much.

12:06
Comment From The Dude
My sister turns 21 next week. Can you recommend a fruity and/or sweet beer(s) that I can get in, or near, NYC? I want her first beer to be good.

12:08
Eno Sarris: Easy Jack is a nice easy fruity session IPA. You could try a milk stout like Left Hand’s milk stout, but that’s a bit thick. How’s Sweet Action from Sixpoint, people out there? Is that a nice cream ale?

12:09
Comment From Pumpsie Green
What will/should Cleveland do at DH? Would trading for a proven veteran on a one-year contract, like Beltran or Encarnacion, make sense, or would they be better off with internal options or a reclamation project?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I’m split on this. DHing is probably a skill, and you’ll get less out of your DH position if you rotate guys in and out of it. At the same time, it seems like an ideal way to deal with nagging injuries to a veteran. Wonder if they couldn’t sign Mike Napoli and make it work. They already talking about trading pitching for an outfielder, so there are only so many trades they can make.

Eno Sarris: Beer interlude!

12:11
Comment From Johnny5Alive
also, i know sandy is not feeling well, but with 3 assistant GMS and a clear need for CF, given what was given up, shouldn’t they have been in on hicks or martin?

12:11
Eno Sarris: I was disappointed they weren’t in on either, yes. Maybe they were, but doesn’t seem like it.

12:11
Comment From Merv & The Throneberrys
Thoughts on Corbin this season? He was solid, then tailed off a bit – are you in as back of rotation guy? I have a trade offer for him already…

12:12
Eno Sarris: He’s fine. Changeup not great, but he’s made it work, pitches in NL, and the slider is plus.

12:12
Comment From Anonymous Coward
Who gets called up to ATL first: Lucas Sims, Sean Newcomb, or Tyrell Jenkins?

12:12
Eno Sarris: Sims

Take the croupy baby out for a midnight walk, take the dogs.. half way out, leave the dogs, come home and make an appointment for tube insertion in the other kid’s ears.. Done Del..

12:12
Eno Sarris: Dude may need the tubes

12:12
Comment From Archie
If the Jays stretch out Osuna, as is rumored, do you think Sanchez slides in as closer?

12:14
Eno Sarris: Certainly has the velocity… but not the strikeout rate. I think it’ll be an audition. Liam Hendricks at 95 has a chance, If Cecil has the velocity back…

12:14
Comment From Miggy Azalea
Any of these guys going to be worth a minimum $ keep for this year? Urias, Glasnow, Giolito

12:14
Eno Sarris: Yes, all of them. People talking about how Urias is polished for his age, and Giolito is ready and close.

12:14
Comment From Merv & The Throneberrys
How does Carrasco, CMart, Berrios, Urias and Giolito fly for my starting 5? Have to pull farm guys for Julio & Lucas and I hope we’re not all waiting for Berrios until June…

12:15
Eno Sarris: A lot of risk. Go get some veterans to fill it out.

12:15
Comment From Archie
New to dynasty and inherited a roster w/Moncada. Realistically, how should guys like that be valued?

12:16
Eno Sarris: Keep them until prospect lists come out, then shop them if you’re competitive. Dude is young and not that close, and there’s a lot of risk between now and then.

12:16
Comment From Alex in Austin
I tend to default to expecting big things from teams with loaded rotations. Cleveland before the season. Mets over Royals. Why am I always wrong? Am I overrating the value of starting pitching?

12:17
Eno Sarris: I feel the same way, and want to call the Indians again next year. Starting pitchers are just so iconic, they change the game more than any one single player, it’s easy to gravitate towards them. But the evidence I’ve seen that I believe in says that pitchers and batters control the outcomes of events equally.

12:17
Comment From Merv & The Throneberrys
that was deep league – 18 teams, vast farms

12:17
Eno Sarris: Oh I believe it, but you still need innings eaters. When others are getting prospects in the draft / restocking, try picking up a veteran SP or two.

If you were building a team from scratch and had to pick 2 building blocks to build around, with a goal of winning a World Series in 3-5 years, who would you select from the following? K. Bryant, M. Betts, C. Correia, J. Arrieta, N. Syndergaard, M. Harvey? In what order would you rank them?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Correa, Bryant, Betts, Syndergaard, Arrieta, Harvey

12:19
Comment From Bork
In these potential trades involving a Braves SP, there’s no way that Bauer could land a starting OF by himself, right?

12:20
Eno Sarris: If they trading Miller, I think they could get an OF, but yeah, one with many years of control.. might need a sweetener. They seem down on Bethancourt, don’t they?

12:20
Comment From Jordan
Hi Eno, I asked this question yesterday to Dave, I’m wondering your thoughts, Pompey for Paxton, is this the starting point of a trade?

12:20
Eno Sarris: I don’t think it’s enough and I think they made their trade for a CF.

12:20
Comment From Derek
I’m going to a fairly brand new brewery that just opened up in town. What specifics should I look for in their beer to see if they have potential?

12:21
Eno Sarris: If you know what hops you like, look for those in the descriptions. Look for styles, if they have a few styles that aren’t just your run of the mill, that’s interesting. Then the rest is taste!

All “session” IPAs are terrible and should never be consumed; Session Double Jack or drink something else.

12:22
Eno Sarris: I disagree but I have two toddlers and like having a plus smell, good-tasting beer that allows me to have more than one bomber’s worth without having to cede control of the kids to the wife.

12:22
Comment From Mets Fan
Span the best fa fit for the Mets CF? Are trade options more likely?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Coming off a hip thing… I want Heyward because he’s young, athletic, and has a bit of power upside since he’s so young. He could play CF for me for two years until Grandy’s gone. Dilson Herrera in CF is not crazy. Span was hurt. If it’s a pillow contract, maybe.

12:23
Comment From JKD
Sixpoint Sweet Action is an excellent beer – very accessible across the spectrum of palettes.

12:23
Eno Sarris: thought so. it’s been a while.

12:23
Comment From Miggy Azalea
Take the risk and keep Melancon for $9 this year?

12:24
Eno Sarris: I’d be trading him if it was my team. I love Caminero and Watson and think they can do a reclamation project behind them. Bottom three velocity and strikeout rate among closers, I’d trade him.

12:24
Comment From Dave Kerwin
Is there any difference between a fosh changeup and a split-finger change? Does anyone call it a fosh anymore? Where in the hell did that term come from?

12:26
Eno Sarris: Man I had the stories in my split-finger piece for last year’s The Hardball Times Annual, but I forget now. I think it has something to do with slipping away like a fish, but I forget who coined it.

Anyway, Affeldt explained to me the difference. A split finger is held between the fingers and leaves your hand from between those two fingers. Lincecum threw a FOSH, which looks like a split finger grip, but if you look closer (I have grip pics in a piece), his last two fingers are on the ball, and the ball comes off of those fingers. It’s like a circle in that you’re still using your other two fingers.

What would the Yankees have to add to the Gardner for Salazar/Carrasco deal??

12:27
Eno Sarris: Maybe a guy like Whitley or Warren to help them replace the starter they lose?

12:27
Comment From Blue Steel
What would be a good return for Wheeler? I could see the Mets moving him to upgrade offensively since the FA options for them are limited.

12:29
Eno Sarris: Carlos Gomez? Haha. These are so hard. They need an MI who can play defense a little, and a lefty CF…

12:29
Comment From Bret
Eno – who are the Giants most likely to sign at OF and SP?

12:30
Eno Sarris: Have a feeling they going to do something big, and probably at SP. Maybe they saw enough in Williamson and Parker that they think they can be cheap at OF3/4/5.

12:30
Comment From Total Clown
Eno! If all outfield fences (and all other obstacles in fair territory between the foul poles, such as seating) were removed, how would that affect the run scoring environment?

12:30

Comment From Yordanos Delivery
Shohei Otani dominated Korea in the Premier12. You see him getting posted sometime in the future?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Too many years of control left. Those years have surplus value — they use the arbitration system too — and that surplus value defrays the $20m max they can get.

Frazier and Chapman to the Indians for . . . whom? Could the Reds potentially land Clint Frazier or is he basically untouchable?

12:33
Eno Sarris: I bet Frazier is *not* untouchable, and that the AFL appearance was a bit of a showcase. Then again, whiffing on five straight breaking balls was not a good look. If Frazier played the OF, might be better fit.

12:33
Comment From Guest
founders all day is a real nice beer; tougher style than brewers seem to care about but i’m all for a nicely hopped drinking beer

12:34
Eno Sarris: I agree, and plenty of brewers actually agree with you. The guys at Cellarmaker are really proud of their Lite Jade for good reason, and Fieldworks’ brewer (formerly of modern times) says his favorite beer is Easy Jack.

If the Mariners roll out a Gutierrez/Smith platoon in LF, how do they approach it? Guti didn’t have much of a platoon split last year (hard to and still have a wRC+ of 167). Do they run him out there against RHPs until he proves he breaks down or regresses?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Can Guti play any center? Because Martin needs help out there against lefties.

Stroman a Cy young candidate in 2016?

12:35

Hey Eno, everyone makes a big deal about good GMs, Bad GMs and Great GMs.. But aren’t they just the “company salesman”? The rest of the FO has their analytics, they’re targeted players, the budget etc.. and the GM basically goes out and sells players on the team and helps in negotiations?

12:37
Eno Sarris: To some extent they are the decider, but they make decisions slightly by picking the people that talk to them, so it really is a group thing. That was one thing that Omar Minaya said when people wanted to point out he drafted many of these Mets. He said, sure, but there were a ton of people in the room.

12:40
Comment From Nolan
The Dodgers are reportedly looking at Shelby Miller and Cleveland starting pitchers. Do they really have so much position-player talent that it makes sense to trade for starting pitching? This was a team where Justin Turner led their position players in WAR last year, so it seems like a better idea to just spend some of their (abundant) cash on the FA starter market.

12:40
Eno Sarris: I agree.

It seems like every analyst has a different opinion on the Mets. I’ve heard people say they should go for Zobrist, Desmond, Span, Heyward, Betts, Parra, and Fowler. I’m not used to this!

12:43
Eno Sarris: I said Zobrist but don’t love it. Span is hurt. Desmond I like if it’s like 3/45 or 1/15 or some sort of pillow-esque deal, not if it’s like 5/80 or more. Heyward I would pay BUCKS for. Parra has been below replacement for two years, and even if his D is better than that, he better be cheap.

12:43
Eno Sarris: Fowler’s handedness issues don’t line up well with Lagares.

Comment From War2d2
Sorry if I missed any Cy discussion, I’m late to the party. Anyway, what are your thoughts on the folks that say Arrieta didn’t deserve the award “for half a good year”? Seemed like there were a lot of them on Twitter last night, and it just feels like the dumbest argument ever. A) his first half was also really solid, and B) all his counting/rate stats matched or were within spitting distances of Greinke/Kershaw’s. There are plenty of great arguments in favor of Kershaw or Greinke over Arrieta, but why pick that one?

12:49
Eno Sarris: I said I had Arrieta third, but actually, I like using RA9/WAR for the CY because I also think WPA is useful for the MVP — Looking backward for a one-year award, I’m okay with rewarding them for sequencing, to some extent. If I’m talking true talent for whatever reason, I’d rather take away some credit for the defense. I thought Arrieta’s season was right there with the other two, myself.

12:50
Comment From Drew
Don’t see a righty sinkerballer a la Stroman winning the Cy. Not sexy like a lefty sinkerballer. Gotta get some Ks

Is it possible for the Mariners to pry Josh Reddick away from the A’s? Seems he’s the kind of athletic fielder to round out their new outfield. DiPoto allegedly tried to trade for him before he left the Angels. Reddick is a year from free agency. What would it take?

12:53
Eno Sarris: No idea how Jerry values DJ Peterson, but if he’s looking at defense, and since he didn’t draft him, that might be a match. People are really down on DJ, but I talked to him, liked what he said, and liked parts of his swing.

super weird question, but being a big guy (6’7) and a former pitcher, and you being the resident hand/grip guy, what pitcher have you interviewed/got grips from had the biggest hands? Did you ask him about it?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Henry Owens, and yeah we did a bit. If I remember right, the changeup was easy because he can choke the crap out of the ball with his hands. And breaking balls get bigger if you put them deeper in your palm. I’d guess quick/late movement like the Warthen Slider would be harder. And Owens is mostly change/curve.

12:58
Comment From John Olerud
A few chats ago I believe you fielded a question about whether steals in Fantasy are now as valuable (or maybe even move valuable) than HRs. If you could elaborate further, I’d really appreciate it. Personally, I can’t see how this is possible. In fact, this year I’m contemplating officially punting steals, since it seems to me that steals are the one category that don’t necessarily ensure a good placing in any other offensive category (except maybe runs and BA for leadoff hitters). But, still, if one were to target exclusively upper- and middle-tier power hitters who hit at or near the heart of their teams’ respective lineups and combined for a decent BA, it seems like that could be an effective strategy, especially in a shallower roto league. Which would suggest steals aren’t as valuable.

12:59
Eno Sarris: I like that strategy in H2H but in roto I don’t punt cats. Steals are rarer now, and last offseason we had HR and SB equal in standing gains points values, which look at the effect of a stat on the leaderboard.

12:59
Eno Sarris: SB absolutely correlated to R, though.

12:59
Comment From The Dude
After three players excepted QO this year, will teams be more hesitant to extend them to fringe players?

Could you please briefly describe the Warthen slider? Harder than average, later break than average, less break than average about right?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Yah. Don’t manipulate the ball with your wrist, throw like a fastball and spin your fingers a bit at the end. Focus on velocity and command more than break.

Is Desmond any less of the giant variable he seems to be? Or was the large chunk of last year that he sucked likely a blip?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Has a game built on athleticism and is approaching 30. Then again, he shouldn’t have fallen off that badly. So I see a bounce, but I don’t want to own him much longer than three or four years from now.

Fantasy trade (NL 5×5): Yasmany Tomas for Raisel Iglesias. Same contract. Who wins?

1:08
Eno Sarris: I’m impossibly in love with Iglesias and don’t like Tomas’ approach.

RE: Kevin Brown, the guy was a horse (7, 230+inning seasons in 9 years, 3 times over 252, including a 3 year span avging 273 innings post season included), he was effective, 2.51 ERA, 2.87 FIP, 164 ERA+, 4.17 K/W, 36.9 WAR over a 5 year, 1209 inning stretch. Has a 68.9 career WAR, 211 Wins, 3.26 ERA… He’s had a better career than Roy Halladay

The only music I hear anymore is the incessant songs of my children’s toys…

Harvey for Pollack, who says No?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Oh god I think the D-Backs, but Harvey way better than Miller, that could maybe happen if they both get to the table. Make Lagares a fourth OF, cobble together an SP5… The only weird thing is two righty CFs, but Pollock is really good.

Comment From John Olerud
But if steals are “rarer” why expend so much valued picks/dollars in chasing them? Because, intuitively, wouldn’t that likely make them more expensive to accrue than other stats and, thus, make it less possible to find the most value during a draft or auction?

1:11
Eno Sarris: I’ve never won punting a category in roto.

1:11
Eno Sarris: If you want to buy some 15/15 guys late and not spend on a big SBer, that’s fine.

I love being the single, no kid family member who buys everyone else the really loud toys for their kids for birthdays/christmas.

How much per week on average to you spend on beer? I have champagne tastes on a natty ice budget, so I want to compare myself to a pro…

1:12
Eno Sarris: I try to keep it to about 125 every two weeks. I don’t go to bars much.

One of my favorite post-story notes in an NYT article was that John Olerud and Mike Piazza, who had a combined ~8 steals between them in their careers, completed a double steal when Todd Zeile botched his end of a hit and run. I love imagining their terrified, then relieved faces. My other favorite is Mike Cameron seeing Kaz Matsui in the locker room and saying “What’s up dog?” Matsui, who spoke like ten words of English, replied, “Chilling.”

RE: Williams for Miller – not enough for who? The Braves or the Giants?

1:16

Arizona is supposed to be flush with cash, could they sign a big fish like Price? what are the odds they spend big (100mil+) this offseason?

1:18
Eno Sarris: I don’t think they have a lot of money. They went over on Yoan Lopez, maybe on purpose, maybe by accident, and then they had to sell Toussaint and leave 1.5 mill on the table in last year’s draft to make up for it…

Puig, Harvey, JBJ, Betts. Who gets fake-traded the most this off-season?

Eno-I have Kershaw, Arrieta, and Max as potential P keepers in a H2H league, I also have Edwin, Altuve, Arenado, Corey Dickerson, Yelich and Soler…..I can only keep 6 total, thoughts????

1:21
Eno Sarris: I suppose you could leave Dickerson and Yelich on the table. Then you have to pick one pitcher to throw back, good luck.

Comment From Trapper
The Mariners seem to be doing this thing where they put real outfielders in the outfield. Combining that with Safeco being a pitcher’s park, are the Mariners a good bet for pitchers looking to rebuild their value?

1:22
Eno Sarris: Maybe but what if they can’t score and they don’t get any wins.

1:22

Hey Eno, got a keeper question for you. Which TWO you keep in your last spot in a 16-team keeper league: Fielder ($26), Berrios ($1), Verlander ($4), McCutchen ($52), or Eaton ($16)
