MASH Report (5/18/15)

Doug Fister is out with forearm tightness. He is to undergo some tests today and may eventually need Tommy John surgery.

Chase Whitley and his strained elbow are also under consideration for Tommy John surgery.

• Soon we will find out if Devin Mesoraco will start catching or have hip surgery.

“That’s kind of the time,” Mesoraco said on Thursday. “We have to see if it’s going to work out. It’s been over a month [since catching]. If it’s going to work, it’s going to happen at that time. If it isn’t, we’ll know at that time. At this point, it’s time to figure it out.”

Mesoraco and the club have also put off what would likely be season-ending surgery while they explore every avenue of treatment and therapy. He reported feeling much better in recent days.

Surgery is still a possibility, and the catching test could be the determining factor.

It may be time to sell him for pennies on the dollar while you can still get the pennies.

• The Rockies are trying to decide if Corey Dickerson will require a DL stint from a plantar faciitis flare-up. He has been dealing with the issue since spring training.

Jean Segura will be out for at least the required 15 days with a broken pinky finger. He is not happy with the decision, but it will probably be best to let the finger heal.

Justin Morneau went on the 7-day DL for a concussion. His previous concussion is the issue which may casue complications and may put a damper on his return time.

Justin Masterson on the DL because he sucks has shoulder inflammation.

Jordan Schafer was a sleeper pick for me to start the season. He seemed to a have a secure lineup spot at the top of the Twins order where he could get a decent number of runs and stolen bases. In late April, he hurt his knee and hasn’t been the same since then.

Schafer, meanwhile, has been dealing with the knee sprain since April 29, when he fell rounding first base after reaching on a bunt single. He played in eight games after suffering the injury, hitting .286/.348/.333, but the speedster was caught stealing in his only stolen base attempt.

“Schafer’s right knee issue has lingered,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “We thought initially he could play through it and see improvement, but we haven’t seen that. So he’s going to the DL to try to get that thing to 100 percent.”

I like him as a buy low once he comes off the DL.

Ike Davis is now on the DL with a strained quadricep.

Chad Billingsley is back on the DL (shoulder) after making three starts for the Phillies. I am a little surprised he was able to throw as much as he did without getting hurt.

•  Ross Detwiler is on the DL. The Rangers pitching staff is a complete mess right now.

Pedro Baez will miss some time with a strained pectoral muscle.

Velocity Readings

Kenley Jansen’s average fastball velocity is inline with his 2014 values

Jake McGee’s velocity was also fine

Archie Bradley’s is fine also.

Chris Capuano’s velocity was near his recent season lows.

Henderson Alvarez is still down 2 mph from last season.

Kyuji Fujikawa’s velocity is also down 2 mph.

I never understood A. giving him 9.5 mil and B. media pundits saying it was a good signing. He’s a bum, washed up.
