Profile: In the minors, Perez didn't strike out a ton, and even improved his K rate as he got closer to the majors, but he certainly struck out too much for a player with such little patience and power. In the majors, he was completely overwhelmed, as his 2.8% walk rate and 21.1% strikeout rate clearly display. His sample size was low, but it was low for a reason. Perez is still young -- this will be just his age-23 season, and if he was a left-handed hitter, you could see how he might carve out some more playing time, since key Tigers infielders such as Miguel Cabrera, Ian Kinsler and Jose Iglesis are all right-handed hitters. Alas, Perez also hits from the right side, which may limit his opportunities to pinch-running. And that is certainly a job for which he is well qualified. Over the past three seasons, he has stolen 81 bases against just 17 times caught stealing, for a very healthy 83% success rate. If Kinsler gets hurt, or Iglesias is really a nightmare offensively, Perez may worm his way into more playing time, but otherwise he'll be little more than a late-innings replacement. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
The Quick Opinion: Perez doesn't have a lot to offer offensively, but he has a good speed and defense pedigree, and may carve out a niche as a utility infielder/pinch runner. And with Ian Kinsler now in Detroit, Perez will be safely behind the "break only in case of emergency" glass. |

| Profile: From 2011-14, Perez stole at least 20 bases at various minor league levels. If he makes the 25-man of the Brewers out of spring training and stays up all year, he could reach that number again. Unfortunately he is a one-category players and in the other areas, namely power and average, he is almost a non-contributor. But hey, there is some small speed upside here for the 25-year-old if you squint hard enough. (David Wiers) |

Profile: Perez was a bit of a journeyman before 2016, making it into 156 Major League games from 2012-15 as a part-time player for the Tigers and Brewers with an uninspiring .558 OPS and just one home run. He changed his career course entirely last year, hitting .272/.302/.428 with 13 homers in 123 games for Milwaukee split mostly between third base and right field, although he did appear at least once at every position except catcher and pitcher. Perez has always preferred to face southpaws, but he was particularly efficient against them in his breakout campaign, posting a solid .787 OPS with six of his homers coming against lefties. Perez was also impressive on the basepaths, swiping 34 bases while being caught just seven times. The Venezuelan native is entering just his age-26 season, so while his breakout wasn't fully skill supported, it is entirely possible that he could sustain -- or even improve. Fantasy owners in all formats should certainly take notice of Perez given his bit of pop and stolen-base potential, especially considering Milwaukee’s propensity to run, although his starting role may be a bit in question following the acquisition of Travis Shaw. That said, he only needed 430 plate appearances to excel last year. (Dylan Higgins)
The Quick Opinion: Perez broke out as a valuable fantasy option with Milwaukee in 2016, and although his track record of success is short, there are certainly signs that suggest he could contribute on the basepaths (if not at the plate) once again next season. However, his draft ranking may heavily depend on the Brewers’ starting lineup plans following the acquisition of Travis Shaw in the offseason. |
