is there any way to use fip to determine a fielding independent whip? i think that would be a nice addition to the site.

This article would be a good place to start if you're interested in how such a stat would work:

    http://www.futilityinfielder.com/dips.html

FIP is basically a simplified version of that idea. If you don't care about park adjustments (as FIP doesn't), you can skip the adjustments and just use the formulae there for non-HR hits and adjusted IP to get something like the following as an FIP version of WHIP:

    3 * [ (.295*BIP + HR + BB) / (.739*BIP + SO) ]

You can use (BF-HBP-BB-SO-HR) as BIP. .295 is about the average BABIP (using (BF-HBP-BB-SO-HR) as BIP), and .739 is about the average outs per BIP. So the above gives you baserunners (with a fielding independent hit component) per out (with a fielding independent BIP out component), times three to scale to innings. You could also add in HBP to the numerator if you want.
