Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: David Murphy

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market.

Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each free agent is likely to receive, FanGraphs is also requesting that readers make note of how much they’d pay each free agent were they, themselves, actual GMs.

In this edition: David Murphy.

Some relevant information regarding Murphy:

  • Has averaged 479 PA and 1.7 WAR over last three seasons.
  • Has averaged 2.1 WAR per 600 PA over last three seasons.
  • Recorded a 0.4 WAR in 476 PA in 2013.
  • Is entering his age-32 season.
  • Made $5.775M in 2013, avoiding arbitration with Texas.

Using the form below, estimate the years and average annual dollar values both likely and ought to be received by Murphy this offseason.

Other Players: Carlos Beltran / Marlon Byrd / Robinson Cano / Shin-Soo Choo / Nelson Cruz / David DeJesus / Stephen Drew / Mark Ellis / Jacoby Ellsbury / Curtis Granderson / Omar Infante / Adam Lind / James Loney / Brian McCann / Nate McLouth / Mike Napoli / A.J. Pierzynski / Carlos Ruiz / Jarrod Saltalamacchia / Juan Uribe / Chris Young.

Everyone likes the other Big Apple 2B, but this kid’s also a proven .300 hitter without the high price tag. And, as you stat types know, Shea Stadium is a lot tougher to hit in than the new Yankee Stadium.

Murphy’s at least half as good as Robinson Canoe. 10 years, $150 million

I get the joke you were going for, but you have the wrong D. Murphy.

Which I suppose could also be part of the joke…which I would have ruined. You’re welcome!
